Rhodochrosite is a manganese-rich carbonate mineral, and this manganese gives the stone its rich rose-red color, which occasionally shades to brown when it oxidizes. Rhodochrosite is actually closely related to manganoan calcite, where much more of the calcite has been replaced by manganese.
